Chicken Cordon Bleu Sandwich

Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of this sandwich is "wow." It marries the flavors of Black Forest Ham, Swiss cheese, and highly seasoned, breaded chicken so well.

The key to taking it over the top is making sure you season the chicken well. Be generous! Let's get into how to make it shall we?

Choosing the bread

Where I live, we have a grocery store called Publix. I shop here often; they have an amazing bakery!!! I picked up a loaf from their bakery and it was a simple white bread that had not been pre-sliced. I highly suggest buying a loaf that hasn't been sliced because you will need thicker slices here and you'll want to determine what thickness is appropriate for the amount of chicken, ham, and cheese you have...you don't want the bread to fall apart.

The chicken is the foundation

The first stage of creating the sandwich involves preparing and cooking the chicken. I sliced a chicken breast in half, right through the middle to make sure each piece was even enough. Next, you'll want to season each slice with salt and pepper, then dredge them through flour, egg, and seasoned breadcrumbs. You've got a couple different options for how you can prepare the chicken..you can bake it, pan fry it, or even put it in an air fryer (yum!).

Once the chicken is complete, set it aside while you prepare and assemble the rest of the sandwich.

A fun trick for the cheese

In the video, you can see me doing a fun little trick I like to do when I'm making a hot sandwich and I don't want to lose all of my cheese to the pan. I take my slices of cheese and wrap them in meat. That way, when it starts to melt, all of the cheese stays in the sandwich.

For the assembly

This is the stage you can decide whether or not you want to add a condiment to your bread. I chose to leave mine without but the choice is all yours!!!

Here's what I did to make sure my chicken cordon bleu sandwich stayed intact. I placed an additional couple slices of ham on top of the bread, then a slice of cheese, my ham & cheese packet, and then my chicken topped everything off. I cooked the sandwich on a buttered griddle until both sides were golden brown.

The final touch to make sure the cheese is nice and melted is to place the hot sandwiches in the oven to finish everything off. The result is a gooey, cheesy sandwich packed full of savory flavor.

Enjoy!!
